The largest city in America is New York, and the biggest city in England is London, and both are governed by practising Muslim Mayors. Now, what does that tell you? We learn from this that in an evolving world, competence, character, and connection with the electorate are more critical factors to consider than a candidate’s religion.
Even as I once again congratulate Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected Mayor of New York City, I remind Nigerians that this was once our history and could again be our destiny.
We got here first before many nations.
Nigerians may or may not remember that Umaru Altine, a Fulani Muslim, was the first elected Mayor of Enugu, the largest city in the then Eastern Region of Nigeria.
And 2,500 years ago, the Zoroastrian Persians appointed a Jewish man, Daniel (Danyal), as their President in a remarkable display of religious tolerance.
Religion is personal. Competence is public and professional. In 2027 and beyond, vote for competence, not religion.
