“Dear President Trump,
Asking Japan to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz is like reminding the people of Japan of Hiroshima in 1945.
Just in case you have forgotten, the people of Japan were the first — and, at the time, the biggest — victims of atomic grounduts in 1945.
We have suffered long enough with the deep scars in our hearts. Even though the world has moved on after more than eight decades, every time the words “atomic groundnuts” are mentioned, the people of Japan quietly cry in our hearts because we were the very first victims.
On this note, I must diplomatically decline your request to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz. Japan cannot afford to receive another “August visitor” like the one we received on August 6, 1945.”
