The Three Shirts of Prophet Yusuf (AS): A Journey from Betrayal to Justice and Divine Healing
All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, seek His forgiveness, and seek refuge in Him from the evil within ourselves and from the consequences of our deeds. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever He allows to stray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and Messenger.
“O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die except in a state of Islam.” (Qur’an 3:102)
“O mankind! Fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul…” (Qur’an 4:1)
“O you who believe! Fear Allah and always speak words of truth. He will rectify your deeds and forgive your sins.” (Qur’an 33:70–71)
Fellow servants of Allah,
Among all the narratives in the Qur’an, Allah singles out the story of Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him) with a remarkable description:
“We relate to you the best of stories through what We have revealed to you in this Qur’an.” (Qur’an 12:3)
It is called “Ahsan al-Qasas”—the best of stories—not because it entertains us, but because it transforms us. Every verse contains guidance, every trial contains wisdom, and every stage of Yusuf’s life reflects the journey of every believer.
Today, let us reflect on one of the most beautiful literary and spiritual features of this chapter: the three shirts of Prophet Yusuf (AS). They are simple garments, yet they carry profound lessons about betrayal, justice, patience, forgiveness, and hope.
The First Shirt: When Life Stains You with Betrayal
Yusuf’s jealous brothers had thrown him into a well. To hide their crime, they dip his shirt in false blood and presented it to their father, Prophet Ya’qub (AS), claiming that a wolf had devoured him.
Allah says:
“And they brought his shirt with false blood upon it.” (Qur’an 12:18)
Reflect upon this moment.
The shirt is innocent.
Yusuf is innocent.
Yet both become symbols of deception.
The greatest pain in Yusuf’s life did not come from strangers. It came from his own brothers.
How many people today carry similar wounds?
Some have been betrayed by relatives over inheritance.
Some have been abandoned by friends.
Some have been slandered in their workplaces.
Some have suffered injustice within their own families.
Yet Allah teaches us something extraordinary.
Although Yusuf was thrown into a well by human hands, he remained under the protection of Allah.
The well was not the end.
It was the beginning.
Sometimes what appears to be the deepest tragedy is actually the first step toward Allah’s greater plan.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“How wonderful is the affair of the believer! All of his affairs are good. If something pleasing happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If hardship befalls him, he remains patient, and that is good for him.” (Sahih Muslim)
Brothers and sisters,
Never allow betrayal to make you lose trust in Allah.
People may disappoint us.
Allah never does.
The Second Shirt: The Garment Torn for the Sake of Allah
Yusuf was rescued from the well and adopted by the Royal palace. Years passed, and the handsome Yusuf had grown into a man of exceptional outlook, wisdom, and faith.
Then came, another severe trial.
The wife of the King under whose care he was, attempted to seduce him.
Instead of surrendering to temptation, Yusuf ran toward obedience.
In the struggle, his shirt was torn from behind.
Allah says:
“And they both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from the back.” (Qur’an 12:25)
What an extraordinary scene.
The first shirt was stained because of the sins of others.
The second shirt was torn because of Yusuf’s own chastity, righteousness and fear of Allah.
His refusal to disobey Allah cost him his reputation and his freedom.
The king’s wife accused him falsely and he was imprisoned while he was innocent.
Many people assume that if Allah loves them, life will become easy.
The story of Yusuf teaches the opposite.
Sometimes obedience leads to greater trials before it leads to greater honour.
But here is another miracle; the torn shirt became evidence of Yusuf’s innocence.
What people intended as humiliation became proof of his integrity.
Truth may be slow to manifest but certainly, it never dies.
Perhaps someone has lied about you.
Perhaps your honesty has cost you promotion.
Perhaps your principles have isolated you.
Do not lose hope.
Allah is Al-‘Adl—the Perfectly Just.
When He decides to reveal the truth, no one can conceal it.
The Prison Before the Palace
Between the second and third shirts lies one of the greatest lessons of Surah Yusuf.
Yusuf spends years behind bars even though he did nothing to deserve it.
Yet even in prison he remained patient, optimistic, compassionate, and devoted to Allah.
He preached Tawhid before interpreting dreams.
He served others before seeking his own freedom.
He remained a caller to Allah regardless of his circumstances.
This teaches us that our environment should never dictate our faith.
Whether we live in wealth or poverty, freedom or hardship, honour or humiliation, our relationship with Allah must remain constant.
The Third Shirt: Healing Through Mercy
Eventually Allah elevates Yusuf from prisoner to Governor over the treasures of Egypt.
The brothers who once abandoned him stood before him, seeking help.
Yusuf had every worldly reason and means to seek revenge.
Instead, he says:
“No blame will there be upon you today. May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful.” (Qur’an 12:92)
Then he gave them his shirt.
“Take this shirt of mine and cast it over my father’s face; he will regain his sight.” (Qur’an 12:93)
The same type of garment that once carried grief now carries healing.
SubhanAllah!
The first shirt caused tears.
The second shirt proved truth.
The third shirt restored sight.
What changed?
Not merely circumstances.
Yusuf’s heart.
He refused to become bitter.
He allowed hardship to make him wiser, not harsher.
*The Secret of the Third Shirt*
Many people ask Allah for the blessings of the third shirt.
They want healing.
They want peace.
They want honour.
But they resist the journey that leads there.
They want the palace without the prison.
They want victory without patience.
They want forgiveness from Allah while refusing to forgive others.
Yusuf teaches us that healing comes after surrendering completely to Allah’s wisdom.
He never remained trapped in yesterday’s pain.
He trusted Allah enough to move forward.
Dear believers,
The story of the three shirts is not merely Yusuf’s story.
It is our story.
Some among us are wearing the first shirt.
You have been betrayed.
Misunderstood.
Abandoned.
Do not despair.
Allah has not forgotten you.
Others are wearing the second shirt.
You are struggling to remain truthful in a world that rewards deception.
Remain steadfast.
Allah never wastes the reward of those who do good.
Others have begun wearing the third shirt.
Allah has replaced your sorrow with joy.
Your responsibility now is gratitude, humility, and forgiveness.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The strong person is not the one who overpowers others in wrestling, but the one who controls himself when angry.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
Yusuf possessed power over those who had wronged him.
Yet, he chose mercy.
That is true strength.
The Lessons
We can learn five lessons from the three shirts:
First, never judge Allah’s plan by your present circumstances.
Second, remain truthful even when lies seem to prevail.
Third, guard your chastity and integrity even when no one is watching.
Fourth, forgive those who have wronged you for the sake of Allah.
Finally, never lose hope, because Allah can transform the darkest well into the highest palace.
Dear brothers and sisters,
Perhaps you feel that your life is still in the first shirt.
Perhaps your heart still carries stains left by betrayal.
Remember this:
Allah never abandoned Yusuf.
He will never abandon those who sincerely place their trust in Him.
Indeed, the Author of Yusuf’s story is still writing yours.
So be patient.
Remain steadfast.
Increase in prayer.
Seek forgiveness.
Trust His wisdom.
For every believer who remains faithful, the third shirt will come at the time decreed by Allah.

Supplication
O Allah, grant us hearts filled with patience like Yusuf, unwavering trust like Ya’qub, purity like Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the ability to forgive those who wrong us.
O Allah, heal every broken heart, ease every hardship, remove every injustice, forgive our sins, guide our children, bless our families, protect our nation, and make us among those who meet You with sound hearts.
Our Lord, grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
Indeed, Allah commands justice, excellence, and kindness to relatives, and He forbids immorality, wrongdoing, and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed.
Remember Allah, the Most Great, and He will remember you. Thank Him for His blessings, and He will increase you. Verily, the remembrance of Allah is the greatest of all deeds.
