Nigeria, we need to ask ourselves a painful question.
Why do we have “Universities of Technology”, yet we cannot even produce something as basic as a screw?
Let that sink in.
We have dozens of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of technology.
Every year, thousands of engineers graduate.
They add Engineers to their names but they work in banks or are teachers?
We spend billions to keep these schools running but…
We import toothpicks
We import generators
We import machine parts
We import even the simplest industrial components.
So what exactly are these “technology” universities producing?
Nigeria spends only 0.2% of GDP on research and development.
Global standard?
1% minimum.
Advanced countries?
3–4%
Even worse:
Only about 10% of research in Nigerian universities is commercialized.
Just 21.7% of research ever gets used in real industry .
Translation:
We are producing papers… not products.
UNIVERSITIES OR THEORY FACTORIES?
Most of these Nigerian technology universities focus on:
– Publishing papers for promotion.
– Academic titles
– Conferences
Instead of:
– Building machines
– Creating patents
-Solving real Nigerian problems
Those private universities where students pay 2-4 million per year, what are you guys actually learning there?
Where are the fruits of all that big Money?
Government University graduates are even more enterprising than them.
Even studies confirm:
Research in Nigerian universities is often not aligned with national development needs
NOW LOOK AT IRAN (LESSONS IN VISION)
Under leaders like late Ali Khamenei, Iran faced sanctions.
No imports.
No help.
What did they do?
They invested heavily in:
– Research centers
-Local manufacturing
-Scientific independence
Result?
-Massive growth in scientific output
– Local production of critical technologies
– Self-reliance under pressure
Why?
Because they understood one thing:
A nation that cannot produce cannot be respected.
THE REAL PROBLEM IN NIGERIA
We are funding:
Buildings
Salaries
Bureaucracy
But NOT:
Innovation
Prototyping
Industrial research
About 65% of research funding even goes to universities, yet impact remains low.
So where is the output?
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE ?
Let’s be honest:
Some “Universities of Technology” should be SCRAPPED or MERGED.
Others should be converted into national research and innovation centers.
Focused on:
Manufacturing
Agriculture tech
Energy solutions
Defense technology
Industrial machinery
A country of over 200 million people…
That cannot produce:
Screws
Engines
Basic industrial tools
…is not underdeveloped.
It is under-thinking.
Degrees don’t build nations.
Research + production does.
Until Nigeria shifts from: “Read and pass exams” to “Build and produce solutions”…
We will keep importing what we should be exporting.
This may sound insulting …but I a being real here.
The realities of today call for urgent attention in this area.
Because the future of Nigeria will not be built in classrooms.
It will be built in labs, factories, and research centers.
Did I speak your mind or did I insult you?
