The legislative process towards the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Ihima, Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State, has recorded a significant milestone following the passage of a bill sponsored by Distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan through its second reading at the House of Representatives.
The bill, identified as Senate Bill 521, seeks to amend the Federal Medical Centres Act to provide for the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Ihima, Kogi State. It was listed among the bills scheduled for second reading in the Order Paper of the House of Representatives for Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
The proposed medical institution is intended to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and bring specialised medical services closer to the people of Kogi Central and neighbouring communities.
If enacted into law, the establishment of the facility could improve access to tertiary healthcare, reduce the burden of travelling long distances for specialised treatment, create employment opportunities for healthcare professionals and support the development of medical services in the region.
Reacting to the development, Senator Natasha H Akpoti-Uduaghan described the legislative progress as an encouraging step towards advancing healthcare delivery and addressing the medical needs of her constituents.
“This is an important milestone for Kogi Central. Our people deserve improved access to quality healthcare, modern medical facilities and specialised services closer to home. The progress of this bill gives us renewed hope that this important aspiration can become a reality,” the Senator said.
She added that her commitment to the initiative reflects the need to pursue legislation that addresses the practical concerns of the people and promotes sustainable development across the district.
“Our responsibility as representatives is to champion initiatives that improve the lives of our people. Access to quality healthcare is fundamental to human dignity and community development. We will continue to pursue this process diligently and work towards the successful passage of the bill and its eventual assent by Mr President,” she stated.
The Senator reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen public healthcare infrastructure, expand access to essential medical services and improve the overall welfare of the people of Kogi Central.
While the advancement of the bill marks progress in the legislative process, further parliamentary procedures remain before it can become law. Following completion of the applicable legislative stages, the bill would be presented to the President for assent in accordance with constitutional requirements.
The Office of Distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan appreciates the continued interest and support of the people of Kogi Central as efforts towards improving healthcare infrastructure and access to specialised medical services continue.
Congratulations to the people of Kogi Central on this important legislative milestone.
