His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, Professor Ishaq O. Oloyede, and Other Distinguished Members of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria, may the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah (SWT) be upon you. It is with great humility and utmost respect that I address this open letter to the esteemed leadership of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria, urging the adoption of sophisticated technology and trained manpower in the search for the Ramadan and Shawwal crescent moons.

THE NEED FOR TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT IN MOON SIGHTING

In the present technological era, it is imperative for Nigeria to fully embrace modern scientific methods in determining the beginning and end of Ramadan. For decades, the traditional method of relying on individual eye sightings from different communities in Nigeria and reports from Saudi Arabia has been the practice. However, with advancements in astronomical science, we now have the capability to determine moon phases with high precision using telescopes, astronomical software, and satellite imaging.

EXAMPLES OF SOME MODERN DAY TECHNOLOGIES USED IN THE SEARCH FOR CRESCENT MOON GLOBALLY
Some of the sophisticated technologies and equipment used in searching for the crescent moon, in line with global best practices, including Saudi Arabia, are but not limited to the following:

1. OPTICAL AND DIGITAL TELESCOPES

High-powered astronomical telescopes equipped with advanced optics and sensors enhance the ability to detect the faint crescent moon. Examples: Meade LX600, Celestron NexStar, Unistellar eVscope 2

2.CHARGE-COUPLED DEVICE CAMERAS (CCD)
These high-sensitivity cameras are attached to telescopes to capture and analyze the moon’s image, even under low visibility conditions.
Examples: SBIG STX-16803, ZWO ASI1600MM

3. IMAGE PROCESSING SOFTWARE & AI-BASED MOON DETECTOR
Softwares like Registax, AutoStakkert, and DeepSkyStacker process telescope images to enhance the visibility of the crescent. AI-powered algorithms are also used to detect, verify, and confirm the crescent moon more accurately.

4. RADIO AND INFRARED TELESCOPES
Infrared imaging helps detect the moon when it is obscured by clouds or atmospheric disturbances. Some observatories use radio telescopes to improve the precision of moon sighting calculations.

5. MOBILE APPS AND DIGITAL MAPPING SYSTEMS
Modern apps and software assist astronomers and moon observers with celestial predictions.
Examples: Stellarium, SkySafari, MoonCalc, and Crescent Moon Visibility Charts

6. SATELLITE IMAGING AND REMOTE SENSING
High-resolution satellites like NASA’s MODIS and Landsat provide real-time atmospheric data to aid in moon sighting.

7. LASER RANGE FINDERS AND ASTRONOMICAL CLOCKS
High-precision laser range finders help determine the exact location and altitude of the moon. Atomic clocks improve the accuracy of celestial timing calculations.

8. GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) AND CELESTIAL NAVIGATION TOOLS
GPS-integrated astronomy tools enhance moon tracking accuracy. Used by organizations like Saudi Arabia’s Umm al-Qura Calendar Committee and International Astronomical Center (IAC).

These technologies ensure the crescent moon sighting process aligns with international best practices, minimizing errors and subjectivity.

ADVANTAGES OF SOPHISTICATED TECHNOLOGY OVER TRADITIONAL METHODS
The following are some of the advantages derivable from the use of sophisticated technology in searching for moon over traditional methods:

1. ACCURACY AND CERTAINTY:

Modern technology provides precise lunar calculations, eliminating the inconsistencies and human errors associated with naked-eye sightings, particularly in adverse weather conditions.

2. UNIFORMITY AND CONSISTENCY:

The use of technology ensures a unified commencement and conclusion of Ramadan across the country, avoiding disputes arising from multiple and conflicting reports.

3. INDEPENDENCE FROM FOREIGN ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Relying on Saudi Arabia for moon sighting announcements may not always align with Nigeria’s geographical and atmospheric conditions. Technological independence will enable us to make informed decisions based on Nigeria’s specific lunar observations.

4. SCIENTIFIC CREDIBILITY:
Many Islamic scholars and institutions worldwide endorse the use of astronomical calculations to complement physical sighting, aligning with the Quranic principle of utilizing knowledge for the benefit of the Ummah.

5. ENHANCED RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE:

With certainty in moon sighting, the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria can prepare adequately for fasting, Eid celebrations, and other religious obligations without last-minute confusion.

A CALL FOR ACTION
I humbly appeal to the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria to:

1. Establish a dedicated National Moon Sighting Observatory equipped with advanced telescopes and astronomical tools.

2. Train and deploy qualified Islamic astronomers and scholars who can interpret scientific data while ensuring alignment with Islamic principles.

3. Collaborate with relevant scientific institutions to integrate Islamic teachings with modern astronomical findings, most especially; the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

4. Provide real-time updates and public awareness campaigns to educate the Muslim Ummah on the benefits of technology in moon sighting.

SPECIAL PRAYERS
As I present this appeal, I invoke Allah’s blessings and guidance upon His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, Professor Ishaq O. Oloyede, and all other members of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs whose names are too numerous to mention. May Allah (SWT) reward them abundantly for their relentless efforts in upholding Islam, may He continue to strengthen them, guide them aright, and grant them the wisdom to make decisions that will benefit the entire Muslim Ummah.

I also extend my prayers to the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria and the world at large. May Allah accept our Ramadan fasting and all other acts of worship, forgive the shortcomings of Muslims who had preceded us, keep Nigeria safe, and guide her leaders aright. May He grant us a righteous end, and above all, admit us into Jannatul Firdaus when the Day of Judgment is established.

Therefore, the adoption of sophisticated technology for crescent moon sighting in Nigeria will not only enhance the accuracy of Islamic calendar observances, but will also reinforce the credibility and unity of the Muslim community. I trust in the wisdom and leadership of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs to take proactive steps towards modernizing moon sighting practices in line with Islamic teachings and scientific advancements.

May Allah (SWT) guide us all to what is right. Ameen.
